While The University of Alabama prepares for and responds to emergencies, it is important for everyone to plan for their individual safety.
You know best what you may need in the event of an emergency. We encourage you to use the resources you find here to develop a Personal Emergency Plan.
Making a Personal Emergency Plan
Plan
- Assess your situation. Think about your routine locations (e.g., where you live, your classroom buildings, your office, etc.). How would you evacuate from these locations in an emergency?
- Look for safe areas. Identify areas of refuge assistance in the buildings you regularly occupy. If you can’t evacuate the building, where can you and others go to wait for first responders?
- Build a support team. Identify individuals who can be part of a support team in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Prepare
- Identify your needs. Identify specific areas of need you may have, such as mobility or communication needs
- Prepare a small emergency kit with the following supplies:
- Battery-powered flashlight
- Batter-powered or Hand-cranked radio
- Spare batteries
- Whistle
- Manual can opener for food
- First aid kit
- Necessary health equipment
- Necessary medications
- Antiseptic wipes or gel
- Bottled water (one gallon per day per person)
- Nonperishable food (at least a three day supply)
- Model and serial number of medical devices
- Spare eyeglasses, hearing aids and batteries
- List of prescriptions, including dosage and the frequency you take the medication
- Medical alert tags or bracelets
- Supplies for service animal (leash, tag, vest, food, etc.)
- Other items that you may need
