Severe Weather – Emergency Management | The University of Alabama

Weather threats vary across the country and should be identified by area. The primary weather hazards for Tuscaloosa include severe thunderstorms, lightning, hurricanes, and tornadoes. All of them have the potential to cause harm or damage and should be taken seriously.

The University has a number of protocols in place to receive severe weather information and to warn the campus community. The University constantly monitors the weather and has direct communication with the National Weather Service in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa County EMA, and an on-staff meteorologist. Should a hazard develop, Public Safety will initiate the notification process through Strategic Communications.

In a weather event, the University may issue advisories or suspend normal operations and activities based on the significance of the threat.
